Eureka!

So, if I move the wool between the needles so that it sits on the other side of the work when I move between knit and purl (and vice versa) then those strange-looking extra stiches don't appear.  Yay for repetitive ripping and quiet thinking!

This extra halfstep isn't in the 'idiot's guide to knitting' book that I bought, even in the included patterns, must have needed the 'complete idiot's guide' instead.  Roll on scarf knitted with such white knuckled tension that it will have to be for a doll on completion!  :)

Pondering aloud

During my confinement I will have a week's worth of time to kill.  The problem will be how to keep myself busy as doing nothing will quickly descend into insane gibbering.  I am a voracious reader so will quickly run out of books, can only do a certain number of crosswords before becoming bored (no matter how much I love them) and certainly can't do endless rounds of chandra & surya namaskar.

Won't be able to be near people and will be leaving little radioactive smudge marks wherever I go so have to make sure anything I touch is cleaned thoroughly.  Keyboards and thus the internet won't be an option.

In addition to yoga and meditation, reading, and crossword solving, should I also learn how to knit?  The needles and resulting (possibly rather munted) creations would be able to be thoroughly washed (removing the radiation issue), I am sufficiently unco-ordinated that it will keep my attention for some time and the implements should be sturdy enough to withstand being thrown across the room when I become frustrated with my own incompetence.

Further contemplation is required.

Chocolate tea?

That's right!  Chocolate fiend that I am it was impossible not to purchase this after happening upon it at lunchtime.  There is a little trepidation involved as I'm not a fan of black tea, but this must be tasted for the sake of science!

Could be awesome, could be hideous.  Results of experiment to follow.

*eeeee*

I know that material things are transient, but as far as I'm concerned that just means that there's all the more reason to rejoice when something good happens and (healthy venting aside) not be too worried when something bad happens.

The many pairs of tabi socks I ordered have arrived!  My feet are happy again!

Thank you lillim for this brilliant idea!

What is required is a day spa for the mind -- somewhere you could take a guided meditation class, read, nap or perhaps get a massage and where mobile phones (et al) and loud talking were banned.

Imagine.  Calming walls of blue, grey and green, quiet and inobtrusive waterfall sounds or relaxing music, no talking bar absolutely necessary hushed whispers... nothing but peace.  *sigh*

Obviously this wouldn't be gender exclusive, everyone needs a bit of peace, although there would be segregated areas because I say so.  This would come to pass when I create my hippie haven, or when lillim oks my Katonia visa.

Standard rant about being sick goes here.

Talking to myself about wardrobe angst

So, I've been finding it rather tiresome to be constantly applying sunscreen (especially when it's too windy for a hat) and am now thinking about getting a parasol.

I'd have to do it properly to avoid looking like an idiot.  Is there a non-TTH, non-OTT parasol out there which would suit my decidedly low key look?  How much of a knob would I look like if I bought one and it turned out to be a bad idea?

No internet at home for a while, the computer is sick and needs surgery.  :(

The good news is that tonight is Tinselworm night, yay!

What's that doctor?  I CAN has radiation soon?
*happy dance*

My gran will be so proud when I tell her!

Learned how to darn socks (thanks to instructions found online) and have stopped the worn parts of my tabi from turning into holes.

Considering that I'm more domestic typhoon than goddess the fact that nothing caught fire or flooded and there were no fatalities means that it was a resounding success!

It's snowing in my hometown.  I wonder if it's settling or if the ground is too wet.

In local news 'storm in a sandwich' just floated into my head and I seem to think it's rather amusing.

Yay!

Feeling much better and bought new shoes -- hooray for hiking footwear!  Now next time it rains on the way to work I won't end up with soggy feet.  :)

Saw the new Indiana Jones movie, fun but a little silly... especially toward the end, but they aren't exactly documentaries.  I wonder what people of Mayan heritage think of the assumption that aliens had to have given their ancestors agriculture etc rather than them figuring it out for themselves.

Mixed bag

Today's been a strange day.  There have been long stretches of hard, frustrating work punctuated by watching Billy T James (RIP) on YouTube while waiting for the printer to finish.  Lots of in-jokes, those sketches have made me homesick again.

Fingers, toes and eyes crossed!

An opportunity to teach in a studio might come about in the near future.  A friend is contemplating getting a space somewhere nearby.  It's too early yet to say whether it will happen or not, but perhaps I'll be very, very lucky and it will work out.

Mmmmm, crosswords...

... how I love you.  Sudoku can get knotted, it's words all the way for me.

Present in the mail!

*eeeee*
Elbow length fingerless gloves, three pair of tabi and a pair of legwarmers (for the wearing of anklet tabi with knee high boots).  It was worth coming into work today!

Skirts ahoy!

They've arrived, my snuggly winter skirts!  The corduroy one will be making its debut at work tomorrow!

Vegan ANZAC biscuits?!

They're a little oily, but prefer that than cloyingly rich regular ANZAC biscuits.

1 cup plain flour
¾ cup sugar
1 cup oats
1 cup coconut
½ cup oil (I used coconut oil, had immersed container in warm water beforehand to liquify)
1 Tbsp golden syrup (didn't have golden syrup, used half blackstrap molasses and half barley malt)
½ tsp baking soda
2 Tbsp boiling water

Mix first four ingredients in a large bowl. Mix oil and golden syrup together in a smaller bowl, if you're using coconut oil do this in the kitchen sink with some hot water underneath to keep the coconut oil from going solid.

Dissolve baking soda in water and add to oil mixture. Tip contents of small bowl into larger one, stir like there's no tomorrow.

Place heaped teaspoonfuls on a greased oven tray. Bake about fifteen minutes at 180C.

NB: These biscuits don't seem to play well together, make sure the spoonfuls are spaced well apart. They are soft when they're ready and will firm up on standing, let them rest a bit before putting them on a wire rack.

And so it comes to pass...

... that I have had to go from happy 100% green energy back to nasty coal badness, which should almost cover the increase in rent.  Now all we have to do is pull our belts one more notch and everything will be ok.
